Bike Lock Review — Worth it? Young Electric 5-Digit Combination Cable Lock

Leaving your bike unattended—even for five minutes—comes with a small gamble. Riders want something that’s easy to carry, quick to use, and dependable enough for everyday parking. The Young Electric Bike Lock attempts to strike that balance with a resettable 5-digit combination, a braided steel cable and a protective vinyl coating. This review breaks down whether it’s worth adding to your commute kit or better left as a backup option.

Specifications & Materials (Material & Quality)

Real-world Experience — Pros & Cons

• Pros
  • Keyless convenience: The 5-digit combination eliminates carrying a key and reduces the risk of being locked out if you misplace keys.
  • Customizable code: Resettable combination gives control over security and is more flexible than factory-set codes.
  • Flexible and easy to route: The braided cable wraps easily around bike racks, poles, and awkward anchor points that a U-lock can’t reach.
  • Frame protection: The vinyl coating does a good job of preventing scratches and reduces clanking during transport.
  • Portable for multi-modal commutes: Lightweight profile makes it practical for commuters, students and travelers who stow their lock in a bag.
• Cons
  • Security ceiling: Cable locks—even braided steel—are generally easier to cut with heavy bolt cutters than hardened U-locks or chain locks. This lock is best for short stops or low-risk areas.
  • Combination vulnerabilities: Five-digit combos are convenient, but if you frequently change codes you need to track them; there’s still risk of someone observing you set or enter a code.
  • Long-term weather exposure: While the vinyl coating helps, prolonged outdoor storage in harsh climates can lead to grime buildup in the mechanism over time; occasional maintenance is recommended.
  • Unknown thickness/spec detail: The product lists “braided steel” but doesn’t disclose cable diameter; that missing detail makes it harder to assess true cut resistance versus competitors.

Quick Comparison

• Young Electric 5-Digit Cable vs. Kryptonite Cable Locks

Both prioritize portability and flexibility. Kryptonite has established name recognition and some models include explicit cut-resistance ratings and sold-through dealers for replacement. Young Electric is more budget-friendly and offers the same keyless convenience but lacks published security specs.

• Young Electric 5-Digit Cable vs. U-locks (Kryptonite New-U style)

U-locks are typically the better choice for high-risk areas and long-term outdoor parking because hardened steel shackles resist common cutting tools. The Young Electric cable wins on stowability and flexibility—ideal for situations where a U-lock’s shape is impractical.

Who Is This Best For?

• Commuters who need a lightweight, easy-to-carry lock for short stops.
• Students and apartment dwellers who store their bike indoors but want quick security between locations.
• Multi-modal travelers who want a compact lock to bring on buses, trains and flights.
• Casual riders who frequent low-to-moderate risk areas and value convenience over maximum theft resistance.

Bottom line: For $24.99 this Young Electric bike lock is a solid, budget-friendly, keyless option for everyday short-term security. It’s worth it if you need portability and convenience; it’s not the only lock you should rely on in high-theft areas.

Final Thoughts & Call to Action

If you want a no-fuss, keyless cable lock that’s easy to carry and protects your bike from opportunistic theft and scratches, the Young Electric 5-digit combination lock delivers good value for $24.99. For longer stops in busy urban spots, pair it with a heavier-duty lock or choose a hardened U-lock instead.
