ZENE Bricks Light Kit for LEGO 43017 Review — Worth it?

If you own the LEGO 43017 McLaren Mastercard F1 Team Oscar Piastri helmet, you’ve probably noticed the same thing many collectors do: it’s an excellent display model by day, but a bit lifeless under dim or accent lighting. The ZENE Bricks light kit aims to change that by adding LED accents around the visor and sides so the helmet actually “pops” when the lights go down. This review examines whether the kit delivers on ease of installation, fit, finish, and visual impact — and whether it’s worth adding to your display.

Why this kit exists (the problem it solves)

• The stock LEGO helmet is a solid collector’s piece, but it’s a static model with no built-in illumination.
• Collectors who display models in cabinets, on shelves, or in low-light rooms want subtle lighting to highlight colors, decals and sponsor logos.
• ZENE Bricks’ light kit promises an easy retrofit that doesn’t require disassembling the entire build — a practical solution for owners who want upgraded presentation without complicated mods.

Specifications & Materials (Material & Quality)

The kit uses small adhesive pads to position LEDs and routes wires through existing gaps in the model. The components are plastic and lightweight so they sit neatly on the LEGO build without stressing connection points. Build quality is consistent with aftermarket LEGO lighting kits — reasonably durable LEDs and tidy cabling — but as with any adhesive-mounted kit, careful placement matters.

Real-world experience — Pros & Cons

Installation & setup

• Installation is straightforward. You don’t need to fully disassemble the helmet — only remove a few bricks to tuck wires into the cavities.
• Pre-attached adhesive pads make positioning quick: peel, stick, route the wires, and reassemble. The whole process took only a few minutes in my test.
• The Standard Version includes an IR switch, which makes turning the kit on/off convenient without reaching behind the model.
• Packaging appears to include everything needed for the basic setup, but check the product page for power source specifics (battery or USB options) before ordering if that matters to you.

Visual impact

• The LEDs accentuate the helmet’s livery and sponsor decals in low light, making the blue/orange/black paintwork look more vivid.
• Lighting around the visor and side areas creates a premium display effect that transforms the model from a daytime shelf piece to an eye-catching night-time showpiece.
• Keep expectations realistic: this isn’t room lighting. The kit is designed for accent and display — exactly what you want for a collector model.

Durability & maintenance

• Adhesive pads are secure, but repeated repositioning may reduce stickiness. Take care when placing LEDs the first time.
• Wires are thin and flexible; route them carefully to avoid pinching when reassembling bricks.
• Overall durability felt good for a display kit. Treat it as a semi-permanent installation rather than something you install and remove daily.

Pros

• Easy, quick installation without full disassembly.
• Two versions to choose from — a budget Classic and a Standard with IR switch for convenient control.
• Affordable compared with many high-end lighting brands.
• Clear improvement to display presence and visual appeal at night.

Cons

• Not highly customizable — designed specifically for this helmet, so limited flexibility for other builds.
• Adhesive-based installation requires careful placement and may not be ideal for users who frequently reconfigure displays.
• Power method and runtime details may not be obvious from initial product photos — check the listing if battery/USB preference is critical.

Quick comparison with competitors

• Light My Bricks — Known for polished kits and plug-and-play power modules. Generally more expensive. Offers more integrated solutions for large displays but at a higher cost. ZENE is more budget-friendly and easier for a one-off helmet accent.
• Brickstuff — Offers very customizable wiring and higher-end control options (e.g., flash, color control). Better for hobbyists who want advanced effects. ZENE’s kit is simpler: less customization but quicker to install and cheaper.

Who should buy this?

• LEGO F1 collectors who own the Oscar Piastri helmet and want a quick display upgrade.
• Casual builders who prefer an easy, low-effort install without soldering or advanced wiring.
• Anyone who displays models in low light or wants their shelf pieces to stand out during evening hours.
• Not ideal for people who need highly customizable, multi-colored RGB effects or who frequently disassemble builds.

Final verdict

The ZENE Bricks light kit for the LEGO 43017 McLaren Oscar Piastri helmet solves a clear problem: transforming a static display into something that draws attention after dark. It’s well-made for its price point, installs quickly without the need for full disassembly, and the Standard version adds convenient IR control. If you want a straightforward accent lighting solution that enhances the helmet’s livery and sponsor decals, this kit is a solid, budget-friendly choice.

If you value simplicity and cost-effectiveness over deep customization, the ZENE Bricks kit is definitely worth considering.
