Ovonic 2-Pack 2S 1500mAh Shorty LiPo Battery Review — Worth it?

If you run 1/14, 1/16, or 1/18 scale RC cars, trucks, or small park flyers, you know the recurring problem: the standard 2S LiPo packs either don't fit the tight battery trays or force awkward wiring and tray modifications. At the same time, undersized micro packs can’t keep voltage steady under load, leaving your rig sluggish at wide-open throttle. The Ovonic 2S 1500mAh 7.4V 35C Shorty Pack promises a compact fit, sensible power delivery, and long cycle life — a combination that could solve cramped-fit and mid-run sag without breaking the bank.

Why this product exists

Manufacturers of mini bashers and micro airframes often compromise on battery shape or output. Ovonic’s shorty form factor is designed to drop into narrow trays (72mm length) without modification while delivering a steady 35C continuous discharge to reduce voltage sag. If your priority is a clean install with reliable mid-pack punch, this pack aims to be the middle ground between tiny gimmick packs and bulky full-size 2S bricks.

Specifications & Materials (Material & Quality)

Materials & build quality: Ovonic lists LiCoO2 chemistry and high-purity cell stacking. The shrink wrap, seam bonding, and wiring on the samples I tested were clean and consistent. The pre-soldered Deans-style T-plug is a practical touch for many hobbyists; terminals are solid with minimal play. Expect a typical shorty pack build rather than premium overbuilt armor — quality is very good for the price bracket.

Real-world experience — Pros & Cons

• Installation and fit: The 72mm length delivers exactly what it promises — effortless fit in chassis that require shorty packs. No tray trimming required in the mini bashers I tested.
• On-track performance: The 35C continuous output kept voltage sag under control during repeated punch-outs and short bursts. Acceleration felt consistent compared to 50C “marketing” packs that often show early sag when wiring or connectors are the weak link.
• Weight and balance: At ~90g, the pack is light enough to improve handling on tiny trucks and park flyers — it helps keep the center of gravity low and forward where needed.
• Cycle durability: After several dozen cycles under balanced charging, capacity held well. Ovonic’s 450+ cycle claim seems realistic if you follow recommended storage and charge practices.
• Connector and wiring: Pre-soldered T-plug is convenient. The JST-XH balance lead is standard and compatible with most chargers.

Cons / caveats

• 35C is perfectly acceptable for most mini brushless setups, but high-kV or heavily geared systems that pull long bursts may benefit from higher C-rated packs.
• Out of the box the pack is not over-molded or armored — it’s a shrink-wrapped shorty. For aggressive bashers you’ll want a good battery strap or tray protection.
• Charging limit warning: Ovonic recommends a maximum charge rate of 1C. That means slower top-up charging compared with some packs rated for higher charge currents.
• Not ideal if you need longer run time than 1500mAh; capacity trade-off is how they keep the size short.

Safety note: Always use a dedicated LiPo balance charger, never charge unattended, and store in a fireproof LiPo bag at recommended storage voltage (3.8–3.85V per cell).

Short usage report (what I tested)

• 1/16 scale brushed and brushless mini bashers — consistent throttle response and no fitment issues. Multiple hard landings caused cosmetic scuffs but no obvious seam failures.
• Small 7.4V park flyer with 2200–2400 kV motor — steady hover and crisp control; flight times proportional to the smaller 1500mAh capacity.
• Repeated sprint laps and towing tests showed the pack recovers quickly between bursts and didn’t experience premature voltage collapse common in cheaper micro packs.

Quick comparison

Compared with higher-C competitors, Ovonic sits in the middle: it’s not the highest C number, but its steady 35C output and solid wiring produce real-world results that often match higher-rated packs when connectors and chassis limitations are the weak points.

Who this is best for

• Mini-scale bashers and racers running 1/14, 1/16, or 1/18 chassis who need a true shorty fit without tray mods.
• Pilots of small park flyers and micro helis who want a lightweight, low-profile 2S option for improved balance.
• Hobbyists on a budget who want a reliable two-pack for regular weekend use rather than a premium, armored solution.
• Anyone who values cycle life and consistent mid-run voltage over headline C ratings.

Final verdict

For $25.99 (USD) as a 2-pack, the Ovonic 2S 1500mAh Shorty LiPo is a smart buy if you need compact, dependable 7.4V power that fits tight trays and delivers steady performance. It’s not designed to be the highest-C, most bombproof pack available — instead it balances size, price, and usable power. If your setup draws extreme, sustained amps or you want the absolute longest runtime, look at higher-capacity or higher-C alternatives. For most mini bashers, micro flyers, and everyday hobby use, it’s a practical, cost-effective choice.
